Join us for an afternoon of fun and creativity at our second annual Opening Day Festival, showcasing the best from the College of Liberal and Creative Arts. Enjoy a concert by SF State's own Alexander String Quartet, stroll through an art exhibit, experience live theatre and dance, groove to live jazz, watch student films and grab a bite to eat at one of the food trucks. Free.

Cinema student shorts

Please join us for a screening of recent student work from the Cinema Department programmed at the most prestigious film festivals in the world, including Sundance, Berlin and Cannes. This sampling of shorts from Cinema will show you why The Hollywood Reporter recently named the department as one of the top 25 film schools in the country.

  • Waiting for a Train: The Toshio Hirano Story by Oscar Bucher (Sundance Film Festival – Best Short Documentary): An engaging documentary short that examines the life of a Japanese emigrant, Toshio Hirano, who fell in love with American Bluegrass in Tokyo and followed his passion for the music for 30 years, to Appalachia, Texas, and beyond.
  • Mothersbane by Jason Jakaitis (SXSW Winner – Best Documentary Short): This personal documentary explores the filmmake’'s ambivalent relationship to his mother’s physical disabilities and chronicles his attempts to be at peace with her suffering and disfigurement. It is a mixed-media portrait, alternating between the present — in which his mother battles a staph infection and prepares for a major surgery — and recollections of the filmmaker’s past.
  • Stepsister by Joey Izzo (Cannes Festival Cinéfondation): Fearing her own displacement, Anna torments her stepbrother’s new fiancée in this short fiction piece.
